BWAGOIA HARBOUR · PLACES TO EXPLORE BY SEA

A harbour to arrive in.
An island to discover.

Photographs of Bwagoia and four documented places to discuss when planning a Misima visit.

Tap a photograph to expand it. These are attributed visitor archives, with the locations identified by their original publishers. They show the character of each place; they do not establish current depths, mooring availability or shelter.

First, arrange your entry.

Misima/Bwagaoia appears on PNG Customs’ declared-port list. Arrange officer attendance and clearance before arriving from overseas. For passage planning, use current nautical charts, weather and local advice; the notes below describe earlier visits.

THE HARBOUR TOWN

Bwagoia / Bwagaoia harbour

Two visiting crews’ photographs show yachts and the town waterfront. Maranatha’s notes describe a confined harbour used by trading boats, with limited room and shoaling farther inside. Keep wharf access clear and discuss your vessel’s requirements with the port before arrival.

Historical harbour account; current depths, traffic, access and boarding arrangements require confirmation.

WESTERN MISIMA

Ebora

A small bay beside Ebora village appears in both Maranatha’s photographs and Robin Jeffries’ 2016 account. The older notes describe restricted space and boats using stern lines ashore. Arrange a local introduction and permission for any landing or shore line.

Photographs in the 2005 archive show an earlier visit, rather than present-day capacity or available moorings.

NORTH COAST

Guluwa / Gulewa

Maranatha’s illustrated notes identify this north-coast stop, with a beach and palms behind the anchorage. It is an option to discuss with an experienced local skipper. Wind, swell and the needs of your boat determine whether a stop is suitable on the day.

The source uses “Guluwa”; comments from island contributors also use Gulewa. The photographs were published in the journal’s 2009 archive.

NORTH COAST

East Liak

Maranatha records an anchorage off East Liak and discusses sand, roll and a reef extending from shore. Use the original account as historical context for a conversation with local mariners, with current charts and conditions guiding the actual approach.

An archival photograph of the coast, not a verified current anchoring position.

Beyond the harbour.

Ebora’s hillside gardens and village life, photographed by Robin Jeffries, alongside Misima’s road tunnel, beaches and headlands from Sailing2XS’s 2016 voyage.

Ebora is named in the original Cruising the Edge story. Sailing2XS identifies Misima but does not give village names for these coastal photographs. Its heading says 2018; the dated entry and publication identify 2016. The named journal is credited where no individual photographer is specified.

Keep the local knowledge growing.

Misima’s skippers, fishers and coastal communities know these shores. Share a recent harbour photograph or dated update, with the photographer’s permission, to help this guide reflect the island today.
