GETTING HERE · PAPUA NEW GUINEA TO MISIMA

A little preparation.
A warmer arrival.

For visiting crews, independent travellers and families coming home.

The practical arrival guidance from our Milne Bay guide, brought together here for Misima. Start with your entry documents, contact the right agencies and arrange the final stage with confirmed local hosts.

Official sources checked 24 October 2026. Contacts are published agency details; attendance and transport must be confirmed directly.

01 · EVERY TRAVELLER

Arrange your PNG entry.

Passport & visa.

Check the correct visa for your nationality, purpose and arrival method with ICA before departure. The eVisa portal includes tourist, visiting-relatives and Yachtperson categories; ask ICA which applies to each person aboard. Do not assume an airport visa-on-arrival arrangement applies at an island seaport.

Digital Arrival Card.

ICA’s free PNG Digital Arrival Card is a separate passenger declaration, not a visa. Follow the official guide, submit your details and keep the confirmation with your passport. Visiting crews should confirm the declaration and vessel paperwork required at their agreed seaport.

02 · YACHTS & SMALL CRAFT

Make the first landfall an agreed one.

Misima / Bwagaoia is on the declared-port list.

PNG Customs’ notice, effective 1 July 2026, lists both Alotau and the Port of Misima (Bwagaoia). Declared status does not establish permanent border staffing, unrestricted wharf access or immediate clearance. Confirm Customs, Immigration, biosecurity and Port Health attendance before choosing your first arrival.

Customs · declared ports and access conditions
  1. Give at least 48 hours’ notice.

Email NCC@customs.gov.pg. Use Customs’ pre-arrival form, supplying vessel details, the last four ports, ETA, intended first port, everyone aboard and the required declarations.

  2. Agree where officers will meet you.

Ask for the boarding location, required documents, fees, attendance and onward-cruising arrangements. Obtain any necessary permission for a first arrival outside a declared port.

  3. Await clearance aboard.

Display the yellow Q flag and proceed to the appointed boarding station. Remain aboard and prevent unauthorised boarding until cleared. Declare food, plants, animals, medicines and weapons.

  4. Confirm the onward voyage & departure.

Ask about a cruising permit for your itinerary. Obtain Customs and Immigration outward clearance before leaving PNG.

03 · TRAVELLING WITHOUT YOUR OWN YACHT

Book the whole connection.

PNG & Alotau.

Explore international connections through Port Moresby and onward flights to Alotau / Gurney (GUR) with the airline. Confirm dates, baggage allowances and transfers before paying for the island stage.

Air Niugini’s commercial service centre lists +675 327 3780 and csc@airniugini.com.pg.

Check flights with Air Niugini

The final stage to Misima.

Ask your host or confirmed operator about a suitable boat journey or a flight they can actually book. Confirm the vessel or aircraft, departure point, price, baggage, safety equipment and what happens if weather changes the plan.

Misima’s airport upgrade announcements are not a confirmed passenger timetable. Obtain current operating details directly rather than treating an old travel story as a scheduled service.

04 · WHO TO CONTACT

The right people for each step.

Alotau contacts are regional contacts, not a promise of offices on Misima. Ask who will attend your chosen arrival and obtain their instructions before departure.

05 · YOUR MISIMA CONNECTION

Arrive as a welcome guest.

Confirm what you will need.

Ask your host about accommodation, landing access, drinking water, provisions, fuel, cash and payment options, phone coverage and local guides. Confirm the arrangements for your dates rather than relying on general availability.

Leave room for weather delays. Use current charts and the PNG National Weather Service’s coastal forecasts for passage planning with your skipper.

Begin with a relationship.

Ask permission before entering customary land, visiting villages or photographing people. Agree hosting and guiding costs in advance, and ask who should make the introduction. Border clearance and a cruising permit do not replace community permission.

Use our contact form for local-connection enquiries. Official entry decisions and clearance remain with the agencies above.
