Women, land and the stories we carry

A documentary project places a Misiman woman’s experience at the centre of the story.

The independent documentary project Misima follows Diuma Heni and her efforts to secure recognition of matrilineal land rights and a future for her daughter.

The filmmakers present an intimate account of family, gardening, land and change. It is one person’s story, rather than a claim to speak for every Misiman woman.

Voices beyond the frame

In a 2018 International Women’s Day post, director Bryan Pitcher celebrates five women who shared their experiences for the film. The post also reproduces supportive responses from people connected to the island.

These materials offer a useful starting point for listening to women’s accounts of their own lives and responsibilities.
